The key word here is "suffer" - not fools. Don't suffer. There are many ways to leave your fools without diminishing yourself and without diminishing your fools. Don't suffer.

Lear. Dost thou call me fool, boy?

Fool. All thy other titles thou hast given away; that thou wast born with.

I think there's a translation issue here. Shakespearean 'suffer' likely doesn't mean what most of us think when we hear that word.

I think it meant "to tolerate" in the 17th century.

The phrase "suffer fools" is Biblical not Shakespearean.
