One of the early super-bloggers, long story, but she's back:
"One of the great treats of living in Italy has been the kindness of natives when I do disgusting, perverted, and probably-illegal things to their language." .... [In England] "My very own graduate school adviser asked me during our first meeting, “Do you speak any language other than American?”
I can’t describe in writing how “American” was said in these contexts except that it always involved a sneer and overwrought revulsion. We took it in stride because half the time, this would be said by someone who in the next breath might say something like, “Moy bruvvah and favvah went to Vy-gus once and won free fousand dollars” or “Ah’m fusty, ave you goh any woh-ah?”"
