The universal they found was to do with related terms appearing in proximity. But this could just show that all languages operate within tight confines of human short-term memory limitations. And that wouldn't really be evidence that human brains have inbuilt grammar departments.

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson has this very premise at its core. Its a good read, but as a first book it is slightly less polished than his others.

Ah, that's the one I was thinking of! I remembered hearing it described, but haven't actually read it. Maybe I'll have to after my wife and I are finished Armada.
