Funny that thenewgreen linked to mk's post because I connected the exact same dots. I do think it's essential for any journalistic enterprise that is serious about examining a subject to use the long form essay. And it seems to me that on the surface, the long form says that the editors have a committed agenda. Personally, I'm more satisfied with my media intake when I've taken to time to read one quality article as opposed to 3 or 4 mediocre ones. From what I can tell, as long as it's necessary to analyze and communicate our complex world, the long form isn't going anywhere.

A very enjoyable read. It's a shame that expedience and money are squeezing out an entire genre of writing. Earlier mk made a comment in another post saying that, "* it would be wonderful to live in a world that moved at the speed of the printing press*", I think this article is a prime example of how the printing press itself has been made to speed up and shorten its cycles. It's a real shame. Could Gonzo Journalism have ever existed if this way of business-thinking had always been?

And unfortunately its not just journalism that's suffering from expedience and money :( It seems that lots of publishing is going down hill.
