Intuition holds that the innocent do not make false confessions. What on earth could be the motive? To stop the abuse? To curry favor with the interrogator? To follow some fragile thread of imaginary hope that cooperation will bring freedom?
One of my favourite photographers; Taryn Simon, has a project called 'The Innocents' http://tarynsimon.com/works_innocents.php, where she photographs people who served time in jail for violent crimes which they did not commit. She photographs them at the scene of their supposed crime. All of these people were wrongfully incarcerated based on mistaken identification from a line-up. While these people didn't confess to a crime they didn't commit it does certainly cast a shadow of doubt on a legal system that knowingly or not tries to convict the wrong person.
