Do we really need a reason? The way I see it, it's an indulgent divergence from the past few decades of factory driven minimalism.
It kind of reminds me of how Apple initially went way overboard with the "lickable" candy styling in early versions of Mac OS X before gradually toning it down over the years -- sure, it was over the top, but compared to the dull gray GUIs of the previous decades it was cathartic. We might eventually look back at the early days of 3D printing and think quaintly of today's super intricate designs. I hope not, though, because I like them!
