I am new here and so far I am intrigued by this site. But I would love to know why you choose to spend some of your online time here.
I'm here right now because I want to be among friends. I know it's an illusion, but friends are people you want to hang out with, right? You feel kind of safe with your friends. Your friends might actually "listen" to what you write and then tell you what they think. When they disagree, they usually give you a good reason. My hubski friends are brilliant. They share interesting stuff with me that I wouldn't otherwise know anything about. They make me smarter. They are not robots, as far as I know. Sometimes they send me postcards from their trip. Sometimes they send me songs. Sometimes I send them my thoughts. That's about it. I hang with my friends at the bar.But I would love to know why you choose to spend some of your online time here.
Why am I here?
Yup, I should add this thought to Anthem -- it takes a while to feel part of the community, for people to get to know you, to run across you in discussions, to appreciate your contributions. I've noticed people like nowaypablo and BLOB_CASTLE (where are you, Blob?) and others sometimes get noticed quickly because their focus is on what can I bring to this community as much as what can I get out of this community. Everyone has a contribution to make. It sometimes takes a while to find out what that is. We're here mostly for the long run, and we're patient. A bunch of people joined 95 days ago. elizabeth and eightbitsamurai and others started contributing right away, but PeterC seems to have just started with a single poem and created a minor hubski sensation.
I think hubski makes a neat sandbox for people who want to take action on something they're interested in. Be that partaking in and starting discussions, sharing your art and creations, and sharing others' too. The fact that there's a place for you to do what you want is the reason Hubski is appealing to me. And yeah Blob what the hell, how am I supposed to stick around if you all are leaving too >.<
I very recently escaped the reddit drama factory and took refuge here! I was looking for a place with intelligent conversation and good people--something that reddit once had--and found it here. So far I generally like the layout and mechanics of it all (especially the lack of a downvote button, it keeps everything more civil while still allowing good material to be pushed to the top) and am looking forward to getting to know everyone more, y'all see like a good crew!
As with a lot of people here, I found out about hubski from a reddit thread. Though I see now it's nothing like reddit and actually use both regularly. That said, I generally don't like the content on here. And most functionality acts/works like reddit. So why come here regularly? The people. It feels like a community. Which is surprising, since even my Facebook feed still feels like random strangers posting. Everyone stands out, and everyone has a personality. Which I find fascinating. There's people like me (down to my Nintendo fanboyism) and there's people that are my complete opposite. Yet, everyone here can chat and discuss things like reasonable people. The closest I can relate hubski to would be the Transfer Student Center at my university. There's a variety of people who regularly go there, and most people know each other. Though, there's two key differences. The first is the type of people. They are mostly the same. They follow fads, don't have unique ideas, and are all transfer students in a variety of majors. Not that interesting to talk to, but it's okay if nothing is going on. The second key difference, which is important, is that the transfer student center has a major rule of not talking about controversial topics. And it tries to reduce debates/arguments/discussions. While hubski encourages it. So yea, that's why I "use" hubski. I feel obligated to come, both to share my thoughts and ideas, as well as anyone who may miss what I say. And I enjoy hearing about people's experiences and thoughts, even if they are on the other side of the world. It really feels like a community here.
Welcome! I jumped ship from reddit 2 months ago with a few others after a /r/askreddit post mentioning Hubski hit the front page. as I said here, once you get to know some of the awesome folks around here, you'll start to feel at home, with friends, and I think that's a unique feeling on the internet nowadays. If I could lend some advice, be absolutely open and confident with sharing, talking, and expressing yourself on hubski and with other hubskiers. We're all family here, and if you do something wrong kleinbl00 will absolutely point it out ;D
I've tried finding thenewgreen's list that he did for new users, but I couldn't find it :( It's a useful list, maybe we should put a couple of lists in the FAQ like "best of" lists? Anyways, I did a quick list of a couple question that were asked during the last influx of users. You might find a couple of them interesting: http://hubski.com/list?id=107786,105375,104773,103903,103537...
