For completeness, let's permeate through the eight possible scenarios.
We can knock four of them off the list easily, because if Trump wins, it's relatively uncomplicated how things will progress. Regardless of who holds the House or Senate, Trump will be certified. There will be a huge stink, especially from House dems, some of whom may try to derail the proceedings, make fiery speeches, etc., but it'll happen. The only question would be whether one of the ongoing criminal prosecutions has a prosecutor that dares charge him, knowing that Trump would never go to prison before inauguration day, and that Trump may direct the victorious-but-eternally-angry hoards their way. Moreso for fun than out of fear, at that point. Jack Smith would be fired on January 20th, and all of the prosecutors who went after Trump would probably be prosecuted by the new AG in retaliation (side note: do you really think Trump would have any qualms about having an "acting" AG, unconfirmed by the Senate because they're completely unqualified or radically fascist, for his entire presidency?). Regardless, he'll pardon himself on day one. "Can he pardon himself?". Of course. He can do anything he wants. It doesn't matter anyway because of DoJ's longstanding position of refusing to charge a sitting president.
If Trump loses, another four scenarios are possible. Like the author, over on whatshisname.com, I fully expect a House coup attempt, yeah, even if the GOP loses the House. If the author is wrong, and somehow the GOP retains the House (currently it's a toss-up), that's even more likely to result in Trump getting unconstitutionally certified in the House, obviously. Absolutely crucial, and unmentioned in the article is whether or not the Senate goes along with it. If the GOP takes back the Senate (which looks likely), I think some GOP Senators will be quite "uncomfortable" with a coup sent up from the House minority, but will ultimately convince themselves to certify Trump "just so that we have a president at all", or whatever, who really cares what they'll say. If the dems keep the Senate, they'll refuse to confirm a House's certification of Trump, and the country would be thrown into chaos, which Trump will use to his advantage, as always. Guy'll probably show up at the White House on January 20th to see if he can get the Secret Service to let him in. Without a doubt, he will direct his supporters to threaten anyone in his way. He's already implicitly guaranteed that he'll pardon anyone who helps him, because he has said many, many times that he'll pardon the low-level J6 offenders. If he loses, by mid to late November of this year, Trump will make it explicit: "Help me NOW, and you'll be a hero in just a few days, with a very special pardon, media coverage, and even a nice position in the government if ya wanna help me sabotage it". Last scenario: If Trump loses, but the GOP takes both the House and Senate, GOP senators will have an easier time convincing themselves to roll along with the House coup attempt than if the dems had taken the House but the minority still managed to certify Trump. For all the "Trump is defeated" scenarios, any prosecutors trying to bring charges will have everything and the kitchen sink thrown at them. Trump will have nothing left to lose. Literally, since I'm sure he questions whether or not he'd still be alive in 2028.
Another harrowing possibility (there are no un-harrowing possibilities) is that there are a handful of states where we don't actually know who won the vote for prez. Clearly this would help the GOP, but I doubt it really matters as much as you might think. They will pretend that some states had illegitimate elections whether they did or not. No states that vote Trump will have "irregularities", of course (unless they really did, but that wouldn't be the case in MAGA world). But yes, the GOP might hamstring enough voting at the local level to obscure the outcome enough that the (actual) experts can't determine who won a state or two. Unlikely but possible.
In summary, even if the dems sweep in 2024 at the federal level, the best case scenario is still an insurgency attempt, with Trump directing his brown shirts to do anything whatsoever to help him get back into the white house.
So, yeah, uhhhhhhhh just steel yourself for all that. Steel yourself.
