There is a marble sculpture in the Detroit Institute of Arts that I never miss: Franklin Simmons' Penelope, sculpted in 1903. I know very little about the statue, or of Simmons, beyond his Wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franklin_Simmons); but the sculpture demands your attention. She sits relaxed and confident, and looks as if she is judging you.

Some pieces of art seem to have a inner life of their own. I think this is one of them. If you ever visit the DIA, don't miss it.
