Several weeks ago, I posted that I would be eating Soylent for lunch for three weeks. Due to a few lunches eating out, it lasted for about four weeks.
Soylent tastes malty, and a bit chalky. It was a bit too sweet for me, however their latest batch has half of the sucralose (30mg instead of 60mg). I avoid artificial sweeteners, but consider 30mg/day to be very low risk. I added the oil blend, but didn't notice any flavor from it.
Some folk report intestinal distress from Soylent. I didn't experience any. My guess is that some people aren't accustomed to much fiber, but as I regularly eat oatmeal for lunch, I am used to it. The new batch also includes some 'enzymes to aid digestion' (Nevermind, they removed it again).
My weight did not change, and I did not feel a significant change in my energy levels. I did however, notice a slight burst of energy about 5 minutes after drinking it. My coworker tried a glass, and it wasn't until she mentioned feeling a bit of a rush (without me mentioning it) that I decided that I wasn't just imagining it. It wasn't terribly filling, but I didn't seem to become hungry again any faster than normal.
I had no problem eating it for lunch every day, but having it for every meal would be miserable IMHO. If I were to attempt that, I would probably add flavors like peanut butter, or berries, as the product insert suggests. I found that one packet made enough for four meals instead of the three that they recommend. The instructions say that each batch should be consumed within 48 hours. I stretched it to 72 hours and it seemed fine to me. It takes about 3 minutes to make a pitcher full, from start to finish. The pitcher is very tall, which makes storing it in your refrigerator a bit difficult. I had to keep it on the door.
In short, Soylent is convenient, and I find it to be a relatively healthy lunch substitute. I'll be ordering another batch. I expect that it will be my lunch for about 3-4 days per week.
