The method was too novel, it caused a lot of doubts. Basically, he has been collecting the chemicals in the odor of decomposed human bodies in his "body farm" lab for 4 years. Based on the analysis of the chemicals, he has built a database of the "smell of the death". During this trial, he collected the air (or chemicals rather) samples in the murdering mom's car, and compared them to his "smell of death" database. He found many matches. Therefore, the conclusion is the mom has hidden the dead body of her daughter in her car. I found this interesting, although it might be too experimental for the current court, but I don't see why this can not be used in the future.
