Would anyone be interested in a sci-fi oriented book/movie club that focuses on short and/or free material? I mentioned this in one of the previous threads of the #hubskibookclub discussion.
This is partially an experiment to see if we can make a book club more interesting by increasing participation, since that has been a challenge in past iterations.
Presumably, if you sign-up for a sci-fi club you are interested in sci-fi, and hence you'll be more likely to have interest in the material chosen since it will be at least sci-fi. Secondly, if the material is free and not too time-consuming you're more likely to actually read it.
Finally, I'd want to start off discussions with a specific discussion topic on the material, something people can at least respond to if they have nothing else they want to say. Of course, people don't have to follow that topic.
So I'd like to make a short list of suggestions:
Roadside Picnic - Free, available online, and a short story. Oh, and it is totally amazing.
Fantastic Planet - a French animated film. It's way out-there and pretty fun. I believe there are multiple sources online for watching it.
Blindsight - Free to download, but not exactly short. An amazing book though and it goes by fast. Very much loaded with material to discuss. We probably wouldn't start with this unless everyone wants it, though.
Feel free to suggest things as long as they are free and/or relatively short.
I had mentioned this earlier so a shoutout to some people that expressed interest: blackbootz
