Frequently people, read as Buzzfeed, discuss the opposite. Squirrels forget where they bury their nuts and accidentally plant trees!
Okay, but can they actually remember or are they simply using a keen sense of smell in finding nuts that were buried? Lots of squirrels are burying nuts, so when they go looking for them they're going to find some regardless of if they buried them or another squirrel did. So Jacobs & Liman do a research study into whether squirrels are going to their own caches of nuts or just grabbing what they can find.
One of the most interesting papers I've read for a while. It raised a question I didn't know I wanted to know the answer to and then answered it fully for me.
