This is still in its infancy and needs tons of looking into, but I know that there is theoretically a way to build lintestone with our CO2 emissions and calcium rich water. Perhaps some structure can be slowly built with this is mind.

Man do I miss Jon Stewart. Few people can take the bull by the horns and make him look a fool with jest.

Sick and surreal. Imagine when you're gone and your descendants ask what you were like when you alive, and your grandkid tells how you were so bad you shot down an asteroid. What?? That's out of this world crazy.

I'll believe it when I see it. YouTube (google) doesn't care much anymore.

Fan freaking tastic post. I couldn't figure out how to find all of the NPR sponsors, so I've just been listening to the radio and writing them down.

Thanks for the links. I'm well aware of how tough it is, believe me. Its almost been a year looking for real work, but my interests have to something I do have schooling in. Which means I just don't know where to look for this sort of thing as compared to neurostuff. The career search hasn't yet slapped me in the face on this new front, because I didn't know the organizations to job search for. Hell I don't have a full grasp of what query terms I should plug into search engines. What is apparent to me is that I'm competitive for the kinds positions I hope to apply to.

You're right. I'm going to check out a political party and see if I can contribute that way.

Sorry, this comment is private.

I'm aware of the Nature Conservatory. I'll look into these other names. Thanks for the help.

fallingsaucer  ·  2808 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The beginning of the end? Reddit introduces profile pages

Hey hey, I just lurk from time to time. It's just that hubski looks at things in such depth, that I cannot cover all the topics that I'd like to when I'm working 10 hour days during these times. I love the conversation quality here, but having a larger sample of opinions is the advantage of a larger site. The reason I reached out for an alternative to Reddit was when I began to see the addendas of the admins and mods and when I began to notice plain text comments from users that were really the face of a company's add.

The good thing I got from this recent event was a little more clarification on what career I'd like to grow into. In the beginning, I just cared about people and the truth. No spin, minimal bias; how do I make the falling apart world a better place? Was interested in sociology, but I've already lived a lower class upbringing once. Same with philosophy. But psychology! That really got me thinking (whatever). So how do people work?

"Wait what about making enough money to live?" .... "Well check this neuro stuff out, its paying pretty well" "Let me see that..... I'll be damned.."

Also, it seems like that neuro stuff was some of the most interesting stuff I have been exposed to. I've been learning about all sorts of cool shit, and I'm here now on hubski — the only one of 12 tabs on my internet browser not having to do with researching the best GRE prep strategies — looking for some conversation on this event from any other source than the shit show on reddit. But I've been realizing today that another thing I could study within my interest of understanding why people make irrational decisions is understanding how extremists are made. Perhaps I could have their heads in an fMRI. Think they would respond well to mail in surveys? This still needs some more thought... Do you think klan members would care if I asked them to remove their silly pointed hats while inside the machine?

When I was still working as a lifeguard two years ago, the maneuver could no longer be referred to as the Heimlich Maneuver in publications because the family felt that it brought too much attention to their name. From then on, they were called J thrusts.

fallingsaucer  ·  3213 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Free speech is exhausting

Your public voicing of this particular opinion offends me. Take down this post. Whatever your minority opinion is, we the majority and thus the powerful, label your ineloquent spattering of language as blasphemous,l and generally irksome, hate speech. Away with any dissent of the majority opinion, for there are reasons these opinions are majority held views. Why do the minorities matter anyway? Their differing perspectives offer no rays of light to illuminate our black and white world. The inclusion of them in serious conversation merely degraded the quality of the discussion. Our groupthink mentality works best without any outside perspective influence and I'm certain with so many like minded people, we can solve many of the world's problems. Stop rocking the boat op, your opinion means nothing and we will stop at nothing to silence your offensive words.

Embrace the anonymity of the crowd. Don't stick your head up, and nobody will ever notice you, or think to pull your data.

What does this do to the freedom of speech? Since the time of the civil rights era, have we more or less protection over our freedoms of speech and press? Are the voices and bodies of desenters protected in any meaningful way, or must we assure our own protection as the Westboro Bapist Church does with cameras and law degrees? However truly protected we are, how protected does the American public feel compared to the civil rights era?

fallingsaucer  ·  3224 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Zika-linked condition: WHO declares global emergency

I've always heard that the Bill Gates Foundation is finishing up a laser armed misquito zapper. Also, wasn't there some scientists who were developing a genetically modified sterile mosquito that's supposed to be more attractive to potential mates than fertile ones?

Or we could create a predator whose sole food is the misquito of choice. It could be genetically engineered flesh, all computer, or bionic. May be the AI appocolypse begins with the well-meaning cause of misquito annalilation though.

fallingsaucer  ·  3298 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: November 16th: What are you reading this week?

It's almost the end of the week, but I am recracking open a book call Influence, by Robert Cialdini. It describes the various techniques and methods as well as tons of peer reviewed findings on how people can be influenced by others. Just did an experiment to see if "Door in the face technique" really works . My findings were inconclusive but my sample size was only 14 so I might try again in the future.

Holy crap. I had no idea. You can imagine my surprise upon hearing this song and reading the wiki when I was just looking for an old jazz musician that I can't quite place my finger on. Is this song a very popular one? I have yet to truly explore the realm of old jazz musicians. Perhaps I have been hearing the song's title everywhere.

It seems Gacy Jr narrowly avoided capture by agreeing to leave if Antonucci uncuffed him. Those same cuffs were used a week later to trap one of Gacy Jr's coworkers in a chair while he strangled him.... I'm a psychology student and lately, understanding the brains of killers is enthralling.

fallingsaucer  ·  3435 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The last true hermit

As my first read back to hubski from the wilderness, I find humor in my slight relatedness with this article.

Though I have yet to complete my B.S., I study psychology. Love it. I love how the mind works in all of its quirks and functions even when they are ... different or go astray as with degenerative diseases or the abnormality of the mind of a murderer. It is remarkable , the nervous system. The way we can offload knowledge into other languages like using one's fingers to remember the tens place in counting or like remembering our to do list. In this way, our working memory capacity increases. I enjoy people watching, especially when I alter their environment by leaving something of value or interest in view to observe the consequences. In these times, I enjoy my interaction with people, and the more I partake, the more I itch to learn and participate more.

Occasionally though, I do not want to be around them. Sometimes, I would much rather get away and explore a river's course than to watch the people as they flock from place to place. In these times, I feel alien, like a bear in the woods keeping a safe distance and living life on my own terms. But, I'll come back eventually, because people are fascinating; please keep your distance.

fallingsaucer  ·  4063 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How do you govern when the least of us can destroy all of us?

This is a very interesting question. Perhaps we will one day understand better what genetic configuration predispose someone to be a violent and/ or ruthless individual. Then, these individuals would have limited to no access to the types of resources that allow the production of arms. But what about the normal person? Couldn't the average person be capable of earth-shattering mayhem? What then?

Treating how people use things for malice seems to be treating a symptom rather than the disorder. We ought to encourage rational and beneficial belief systems and discourage harmful ones, that is those that should be discarded. Suppose there is resistance. How does one fight a war of beliefs and emerge the victor? Won't we always leave a residue until everyone decides for themselves to discard their beliefs on their own? Such governing must not resort to compulsion, but instead, to guidance and leading the world societies by example.

What do you think?
