I don't know why people seem so hesitant to delete their facebook profiles. I got rid of mine two years ago (in the wake of one of their numerous privacy scandals) and haven't looked back since. I've found that I feel less stress without it, and I really don't miss it. If people want to tell me something they seek me out. I can do without the inane details of people I went to summer camp with four years ago.

Looks like the article got removed. I'd be interested in seeing what it was though... I don't suppose anyone has a copy cached? Or perhaps someone would provide a synopsis?

Got it.

I really have no idea. I'm from the US, I just study Arabic. I'd certainly be interested to know though!

Yeah, I had pretty high expectations for the film and they were certainly met. I especially loved the soundtrack, it was really well put together.

Here's a link to the original video, just so the creator gets credited.

GoatFood  ·  4411 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Consequences of Machine Intelligence

Do you believe it's possible to effectively plan for the consequences of machine intelligence? After all, the ramifications would be so huge it's difficult to know exactly what the practical implications for society would be. Moreover, we're talking about a technology that doesn't even exist yet. We don't know what the limitations (or unforeseen possibilities) are implicit within an intelligent machine. How can we prepare ourselves for something we won't be able to understand until we build it?

GoatFood  ·  4504 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The New Digg
Absolutely, I agree. There's dogma and then there's community. I guess my thinking was more along the lines of 'If I'm already seeing this stuff on facebook and twitter, why come to digg to see it again?'
GoatFood  ·  4529 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The fastest way to send humans to Mars is to not worry about bringing them back
I would jump at the opportunity to make a one-way trip to Mars. It strikes me as one of the boldest adventures a person could take.
GoatFood  ·  4533 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Reddit Illuminati?
This should clear everything up. Nothing to get uppity about here... OP admitted it was a misunderstanding.
I agree I jumped the gun, but the only problem I had was when syncretic removed it because he thought I was fishing for some drama instead of coming here. Sorry, but that's just the dumbest I'd heard all day. Dumber than my post. But alas, he's notorious for removing threads and flashing his green mod e-peen even when no one wanted to see it. The funny thing though, is that I had 30 upvotes on the submission and 10+ upvotes on all my comments before it got linked to /r/worstof. Then suddenly I'm in the negatives and my inbox is full of "LOL RAGE HARDER HAHA YOU MUST BE TROLLING OR JUST RETARDEDDD!1!!!" I expected more from /r/worstof. Horrible mistake.

Although all those removed comments does look rather sinister, especially given the title of the thread.

GoatFood  ·  4534 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Dalton Caldwell: What Twitter could have been
Could someone explain this to me in simpler terms? Perhaps I don't understand what an API is. Exactly what kind of service would Twitter have been if the API camp won?
GoatFood  ·  4534 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Dalton Caldwell: What Twitter could have been
Thanks mk, that's a very helpful explanation.
GoatFood  ·  4534 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Google+ creator: Don't call it a social network
I'm a little confused about how google+ actually contributes to the individual experiences of using google's other services. I used google+ for a time (during closed beta and for several months after its opening), and eventually deleted my account because no one used google+ and I eventually stopped checking it. I noticed no difference in the behavior of other google services.

I like how much they anthropomorphize the painting. "It needs to rest." Guess that trip to the "hospital" must have really stressed it out. Better give it some red wine and stick it in a hot bath.

Is it possible that the bill is now so lubriciously overreaching that it could never be enacted into law? Perhaps these amendments have made CISPA unsupportable.
GoatFood  ·  4600 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: This is why you don't fuck with the dark side of memes.
That reminds me of when 'Scumbag Steve' found out he was a meme and started tweeting about how funny it was. The meme is still around, so I guess that didn't really kill it, but it certainly didn't fuel in the way that becoming defensive would have.

Really? Five dollars? I've only been once, but as I recall those tokens aren't cheap. Especially when you consider how many tickets it takes to earn some five cent trinket.
GoatFood  ·  4642 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: "Low Cost Region" - a ramble
You know, I've had some bad experiences with outsourced customer service, but I've also had a number of really pleasant ones. I've even had a couple where they seemed like such natural speakers that I thought they must be located somewhere in America before a little hint tipped me off, like a name or a slightly mispronounced word. It sounds like steve's replacement might not be great business investment, but I don't think its true that outsourced customer service always means a loss in quality. In fact, many of those workers probably deserve to be doing more than telling people how to connect to a wireless router (or whatever).

Anyways, congratulations steve.

GoatFood  ·  4647 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Get Dense
Why do you say that? I haven't read it either, is it taken out of context?
GoatFood  ·  4647 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Get Dense
Those are some excellent points, thanks for sharing. There are also substantial technological barriers to high density farming. People often talk about vertical farming as a way to reduce the surface area needed for agriculture and to solve problems associated with shipping produce long distances. It's compelling theoretically, but as it turns out there are actually a lot of problems with trying to grow vegetables in a skyscraper. Perhaps as our technology increases we will be able to find more viable ways to increase agricultural density.

I agree, this is a tremendous idea. It would be even better if they could earn a degree or license through this program. What if instead of receiving a court order to learn algebra, criminals had to study some kind of trade? This would give them a way to enter the formal economy, providing stability in their lives and eliminating the need to earn money through crime.
GoatFood  ·  4649 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: SOLIPSIST
That was really cool. Anyone have any idea what it might mean?
I don't know, the FBI apparently thought they were enough of a threat to arrest several of their members. LulzSec (although I'm not as sure about AntiSec) has been linked to several large scale data heists. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LulzSec I'd agree that taking down a webpage is a rather childish statement, but they are clearly capable hackers.

I'm not sure that this is significant. Think about salt, oranges, or birthday cake. You can 'taste' just about anything.
GoatFood  ·  4657 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Ask Hubski: What is the greatest travel experience you've ever had?
It is an extraordinarily beautiful place, and the people are friendly, and the music is great. I will say the food leaves something to be desired. Communism has really restricted the availability of food. Pretty much every meal we ate consisted of grilled chicken, pork, beef, or sometimes fish, served with beans and rice and sweet potatoes. Nothing wrong with that, but it gets tiresome eating the same dish two or three times a day. Ironically, tourists eat much better than locals, who have even less access to food. This is intentional. The government wants to milk all the money from tourists that they can, the idea being that this money can be redistributed to Cubans. In practice, I doubt that strategy is very effective, thanks to corruption.
