I'm with you on this article. It did a pretty poor job of summarizing the results. I am not sure what the author of the study actually learned. I play a bit of music too though, and I have to say that when I'm just fooling around it feels very different mentally compared to when I am playing a piece I know. I'm sure other musicians feel the same. It does feel like a different thought process that's going into it.
