I totally agree with you: it's like a written documentary. I think the mixture of pictures, videos, other media, and journalism is fantastically executed here. I'm still reading it, and I'm enjoying it. But I suppose I am a sucker for parallax scrolling. edit: After finishing the article, I would add: the article was very well written. The fact that I knew there would be an avalanche at some point and that I knew people would die (I wasn't sure who) created a lot of suspense. A great read, and a great experience.
