I can understand your point of view here, but having everything public fosters the rapid spread of ideas and, for lack of a better word, networking. It's great being able to go to someone's profile whose posts you enjoy and see whose posts they enjoy in one easy click. Transitive property, you've suddenly got a lot of new content to read in one simple step.
