Are they any closer to creating AGI than they were when they were founded, and if not, is that the root of the issue between Sam and Ilya? That a direct path from LLMs to AGI exists is axiomatic to some of these people, but I don't really see it. Maybe the board was getting pissy because Altman decided it was a better business to focus squarely on LLM development where the company can turn itself into less of a "money incinerator" and more of a mere money pit. Maybe SBF poisoned the term for me, but I can't help but be anything but skeptical of self-described effective altruists, so my natural tendency is to distrust a board full of them, fair or not.
