Arecibo, Parrot'splained: I'd like to clarify that Arecibo wasn't exclusively used for extraterrestrial communication attempts, it was also an excellent tool for radio astronomy, and even ionospheric mapping via ionosonde. The space physics community would love to replace or reconstruct Arecibo's capabilities. China's got FAST, but these types of facilities are limited in that they can only focus on a very small segment of the sky at once. Lotta folks very upset. My advisor has spent much of this week commiserating with current and former colleagues. 2020 continues.
