This is the same LANL group that's been saying extremely dire things for about two months now. Their stuff doesn't get talked about all that often, but it also doesn't get proven wrong. They're not saying "A mutant coronavirus has emerged, even more contagious than the original" what they're saying is they've tracked sixteen relevant mutations to the binding site that most vaccines are targeting and that one of those mutations (D14G) has made the virus more effective. They are further saying that when they sequence the virus, they see many sites where Coronavirus Classic (D14 Spike) and New Coronavirus (G14 Spike) are both present in a population but over a few weeks, New Coronavirus wins the taste test. The argument is that vaccines developed to treat Coronavirus Classic are going to be less effective against New Coronavirus.
