I had dinner with the guys who started redditgifts a while back. The subject of /r/atheism came up. I opined that they were giving atheism a bad name because it was a bunch of strawman metooism. They responded that when you grow up in Utah surrounded by jesusfreaks it's nice to have a screaming room where you're not the problem. I lost friends because I wouldn't go to Younglife with them. I get it. When everyone around you treats you like a cartoon, it's rational and reasonable to look for counter-cartoons. The big problem here is that we hew to our cartoons rather than confronting the humans in front of us. That, more than anything, has been the contribution of social media to society. We had Drah Mah last year with a student. When interviewed, we caution the students that they will be dealing with patients from all walks of life, gay, straight, religious, antireligious, and that we provide for the patient's needs as determined by medical necessity and personal choice. Abortion was called out explicitly. The students sign their acceptance and agreement with this. But when we had Saudis show up in chadoors, she wasn't cool with it. And when we had a lady with two kids whose unborn child popped a whole bunch of troubling stuff on the genetic test, this student stone refused to help her find a place to get an abortion other than Planned Parenthood. She was willing to say what she needed to get in the door and I guess figured we weren't serious or something? On the plus side, between family planning, emergency contraception and an inability for genZ to get laid, abortion is at an all-time low. On the minus side, the crazed 'wingers have been emboldened enough that they think doctors should face murder charges if they don't reimplant ectopic pregnancies. So yeah. Shitty sneering is shitty but you can't pretend the prolife side is without shitty sneering. These are the fuckers that stood in front of our school buses several times a year with pictures of aborted fetuses. It isn't the abortion rights activists putting up billboards everywhere, always, and it isn't the abortion rights activists murdering doctors. So yeah. You have a point? But your outrage is unearned.
