I knew a guy who used to work at a foundry outside Chicago back in the early '80s. Molten metal everywhere. Nothing that couldn't kill you before you knew you were dead. Puddles of liquid cyanide big enough to slip in. He said he and most of his buddies got through the day by being stoned out of their minds. Also a union gig paying $80k a year. I don't know anyone at foundries now. I've seen some sketchy machine shops. And I know they aren't doing union work and I know they aren't making $80k a year and I know that things aren't appreciably safer since the early '80s. And I know that if something goes wrong, it's a lot more perilous. That or convincing an Engineer to take on a ton of responsibility for not a ton of money. shrug.
