I think that fewer people should call themselves 'religious.' I think that it should be illegal to expose children under the age of 16 to religious ideology or texts, except as historical documents. I think that if a group of adults all agree to read from an old book once a week and reflect on how they can be better people, kinder to their neighbors, that's great, and should be encouraged. I think that some churches actually have this to some degree, many don't. I think that Unitarian Universalists have it closest to correct, doctrinally speaking. Love everybody, love them so much it hurts. The fact that prosperity theology exists is proof positive to me that in most instances the Bible in specific and religious texts in general are tools used by clever people to affect the behavior of less clever people. Sometimes those clever people do genuinely want to make people happier/more ethical/moral, sometimes they need a new jumbo jet, GOD NEEDS A NEW JUMBO JET.
