I think it only matters if you post things online that you would not want people associating with your real life self. Then there is always the classic 'employer' problem that overshadows any online social engagement. If you are not anonymous, you have may have to use extra caution in order to avoid negative consequences in the present or the future. This is one of the main problems that Google was trying to address on G+ with its 'circles' feature.
