Kombucha was a pretty common thing in the USSR, it was called the tea mushroom :) Everyone was doing it, including my boyfriend's family. It's kind of like Kvass (a rye bread drink). Just got back from Ukrainian camp and a friend gave us a mushroom to try it out! I often crave Kombucha when I'm hungover and 5$ a bottle is just ridiculous. So far, we've put the sugar and black tea and will be bottling it up with some raisins in a couple day to add a bit of carbonation. It's our first batch, I wonder how it's gonna turn out! I'll let you know :)
