For me it was my freshman year at University, 1982, University of Oklahoma. Didn't have any idea what I wanted to do vocationally, but I was good at math and science, so I enrolled in general engineering. All engineers had to take "Intro to Computer Science". Learned C in that class (never having programmed before), realised I had a knack for it, and liked it. Switched major to Comp Sci and never looked back. Still doing work in C, on embedded processors, to this day.
