I'm reminded of Dan Harmon's story circle structure and the idea of having recursive story circles. I think that structure works great for more open world environments where you treat every quest, whether it be main or side, as it's own story instead of just another hurdle to get to the end of an otherwise linear story. My wife is just now playing through New Vegas and I forgot how great that game was. Damn near every location has some sort of story to it, and they more than often stand on their own. On the other hand, I cannot get through any Assassins Creed game since I stopped playing AC3 halfway through.
