I prefer to rather think of it that we gained a new category of these "new", interesting dwarf planets who were earlier overlooked. Yes, Pluto was "demoted", but I think this is outweighed by the renewed attention to especially Ceres, and also helped higlight how (relatively speaking) massive the recently discovered trans-Neptunian bodies actually are. I think that giving things a label, a category can help especially people not well versed in space science.

So, yes, I can feel a bit like you do but I also think the solar system feels enrichened by this move.
