This is dead-on, IMO. Figure drawing was a very meditative thing for me. -Drawing what you actually see, not what your brain thinks you see. Not skin, but a transition from light to dark. Not an arm, but a line in space. The feeling you get when you see an image come from this unconscious action is really wonderful. I agree that more can be taken from it than just artistic technique.
