I wonder if, when the boy pulled the sword out from the river, he unwittingly unleashed a horde of monsters that were sealed away by the sword's power onto his village. He was able to protect the village using the sword, but the village considers the sword a bad omen, and banishes him from his home. Then he probably met a soldier along the way that tells him the sword is legendary, and that he should visit eight temples to restore its power. Then he teamed up with a princess and a sprite and yes this is the exact plot of Sword of Mana I'm so sorry
