Socially awkward for sure. I kind of like the random nature of flying. It can also be horrible, we've all sat next to the smelly fat guy.
My uncle Bill recently told me that he saw a very large woman coming down the aisle toward his seat. He immediately put the arm rest down. The woman sat next to him and asked, "would you mind putting the arm rest up"? His reply, "I'd rather not". Her response, "I promise I'll stay on my side". Bill, "I really would rather not". I admire him for his resolve. It was a quiet flight.
