Interesting read.

First, most social networks start with a chicken and egg problem at launch
-Yep. We have been very fortunate that people have invited their friends and moreover they've mentioned us on other aggregators and helped spread the word. Without that, we'd be a ghost town. But yes... chicken and egg.

Secondly, social networks scale when users bring in other users
Like I said, we've been lucky in this regard. People mention us outside of our walls and that sort of growth is real growth. If we get some press we see a spike and then it fades, but when people reference us to others of their own accord it brings by users that stick around and actually join in the community. Interesting how it works.

Finally, most networked startups start out by targeting a specific market.
-This we haven't really done outside of trying to encourage "thoughtful content." I wonder if it would be wise to try and focus on a certain "niche"? I don't think so. I'm open to suggestions though.
